Consumerism in the Simpsons

The United States of America is one of the main countries in which capitalism and consumerism reign. This can be seen in the tv show quite clearly as the characters share many features and behaviours typical from this economical current. For instance, there are many scenes in the supermarkets which show the family shopping and buying things they do not really need but that are on sale.

Here you can watch this video in which Homer decides to go shopping for a new computer and gets tricked to buy the most expensive one of the shop eventhough he does not really need one so special. However, the salesman convinces him that in order to not be a "sucker" he need to buy that one.

Something very curious happens in the Simpsons game, The Simpsons: Tapped Out. Among other categories of life quality like security or ecology there is one of the consumerism. You can find more information in The Simpsons Tapped Out Topix

  1. It is incredible the similitude with the real life… Actually, I’ve also bought things without needing them, as Homer does with the computer.
